BASAA Fall Meeting
2021 Virtual BASAA Fall Meeting
The BASAA Fall Meeting is typically a professional development opportunity for our community. Due to Covid-19, we are structuring it a little differently with a virtual Fall Meeting.
The Study Abroad Comeback: Re-discovering Our Purpose
Friday, December 10
9:30 AM – 12:00 PM
Now that study abroad is making its “comeback,” it is important to reflect on the changes the field has undergone. More importantly, we must take the time for ourselves and reflect upon our sense of purpose. We have all grown in many ways as the field has shifted, and we must take the time to think about what has changed for us as study abroad professionals. How do we want to move forward as study abroad opportunities return? In what directions are we hoping to grow, either within or outside the field? We hope this fall meeting allows you to refocus your energy, redefine your career goals, and move forward, because in order to best serve our students, we must take time for ourselves.
Just Keep Pivoting: Assessing Ongoing Transformations in Education Abroad and the Careers of International Educators
Meaghan Murphy-Rennie, Assistant Director of Education Abroad, University of Hartford
Zac Macinnes, Director of Campus Partnerships, TEAN and ISA by WorldStrides
Two years ago this month, a novel coronavirus emerged in Wuhan, China, that would go on to upend nearly every aspect of our personal and professional lives. While the pandemic is not yet over and history not yet written, it is becoming clear that changes to education abroad, higher education at large and our careers will be both far-reaching and long-lasting. In this two-part interactive discussion, we’ll seek to begin to understand the ongoing transformation taking place in two arenas: 1) the operation of education abroad offices, and 2) the career journeys of international educators.
We will begin our conversation by assessing some of the changes to study abroad office policies, procedures and operations – including in advising, pre-departure orientation, health & safety (including travel restrictions based on CDC and/or State Department advisories), program planning, marketing and more. In the second half, we will talk about YOU. How have our roles changed? How has the way you think about your career changed? Have you experienced burnout? Been laid off or furloughed? Changed jobs? Changed careers? Thought about it?
Through a combination of polls and open discussion, we hope to learn from one another and share ideas that steel our collective resolve as we enter the third year of COVID-19.
TED Talk-Style Conversations:
“Tips & Tricks to Better Align Yourself with Your Goals”
We will hold a series of “TED Talks” on various topics around personal career growth and development. Join us as we learn from individuals in our community and hear what their experiences have been like as they have navigated their journeys in the field of study abroad.
Let’s celebrate the end of the year and the start of the holiday season! We hope you’ll join us for our final Happy Hour of the year. Come relax, unwind, and have a good time with friends and colleagues! This will be an indoor event. We will have a private space, but masks are not required by the venue, so please assess your own risk regarding COVID-19.
